“In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” — John 1:4-5

There’s a lot packed into these two short verses. They tell us something profound: Life itself was in the Word, and that Life was Light. But what kind of life is being spoken of here? And why does darkness fail to “comprehend” it? Let’s walk through this together.

The Life in the Word Is More than Human Life

When John 1:4 says “in him was life,” it is not talking about ordinary human existence. This is the Life of God Himself — Eternal Life. From the very beginning, before anything else existed, Eternal Life was already present in the Word, and nowhere else. It didn’t originate somewhere else and get added to the Word later. It has always been there.

The Tree of Life and the Word Are the Same Person

Now here’s where things get interesting. Turn to the book of Genesis:

“And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.” — Genesis 2:9

At first glance, this seems to raise a question. If Eternal Life was in the Word from the beginning, how can the Bible also say Eternal Life was in the Tree of Life in the garden? Is that a contradiction?

No — because the Tree of Life and the Word are the same Person. Life Eternal has always lived in the Word, who is our God. It was never contained in a natural, physical tree. The tree in the garden pointed to something greater than wood and fruit; it pointed to the very source of life itself: God, the Word.

Adam Was Made to Live by the Word

In the beginning, Adam was created to live by the Tree of Life — by God Himself, the Word. His soul was designed to be fed by what God spoke to him. That’s how he was meant to sustain Eternal Life within himself.

But Adam refused. Instead of feeding on the Word, he chose to follow his own will, and in doing so, he lost Eternal Life.

That Eternal Life in Adam was the Light — the very nature of God placed in man to guide him. Adam had freedom of choice, yes, but the wisest use of that freedom would have been to follow his Creator, the Word. Why? Because it was God who made him. God created everything, and God alone knew what was truly best for Adam. When Adam refused to walk in the Light, he chose instead to walk according to his own understanding — and that choice is what brought death to his soul.

The Same Pattern Repeats Today

This isn’t just an ancient story. We see the same pattern playing out on earth right now. Humanity, by and large, doesn’t want to live by the Word of God. People prefer to live by their own understanding, and because of that choice, human hearts are filled with darkness. Just look at people’s actions — they prove it.

Many believe they know a great deal about life, yet in reality they don’t know anything of real substance. The only way to truly know the Truth about life is through our Creator, who is the Word. He is Life itself. Trying to understand human life apart from Him is nothing short of madness.

Light Come Into the World — and Rejected

Consider this warning from Jesus Himself:

“And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” — John 3:19

This verse tells us plainly: humans condemn themselves when they choose to live by lies and their own understanding instead of the Word. We are called to live by the Light, not by darkness.

Jesus also said:

“While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.” — John 12:36

When Truth comes to us, our response matters — we must believe in It. Truth is the only thing that can change a human soul. Truth is the only thing capable of pulling a person out of darkness.

Why Do We Hate One Another?

Take an honest look at the world today. Have you ever asked yourself why people hate each other so deeply? Hatred doesn’t come out of nowhere — it starts with a lie. Before anyone can hate another person, a tribe, a nationality or an entire race of people, they first have to believe some form of lie about that person or group.

The same principle applies to self-destructive behavior. Why would someone smoke and knowingly damage their own body? Because they first believed a lie telling them smoking was somehow good for them.

We were never meant to live in darkness — in lies and in our own limited understanding of things. We were made to live in the Truth, and God is the Truth.

Who Is Really Speaking to You?

The world today is shaped heavily by politics, social media, and countless other voices competing for our attention. But here’s the question we each need to ask ourselves: do these voices — politics, social media, and everything else influencing us — actually speak on behalf of God?

If a politician, an influencer, a teacher, a leader or even a preacher comes to you with words that are not coming from God, that person is a liar and a representative of darkness on earth, no matter how convincing or popular their message may sound.

I Am the Light of the World

Jesus made an extraordinary claim about Himself:

“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” — John 8:12

This scripture is a call to every one of us — a call to follow the Truth that comes from God. Refusing His Truth plunges our souls and minds into darkness and damages our very nature. This is why, tragically, a person can even laugh and take pleasure in seeing another human being physically abused and tortured. That’s how deeply darkness can corrupt a heart that has turned from the Light.

An Invitation

Darkness — lies — has covered the world, along with human minds and souls. The question that remains is a personal one: are you ready to open your heart to the Truth and let the Light of God into your soul or do you still want to live under the influence of lies and destroy your nature?
